Charlotte Salt

Charlotte Salt is an artist based in North Yorkshire, UK. Her ceramic work is deeply rooted in traditional craftsmanship, using stoneware clay to create pieces that feel both ancient and contemporary. Her aesthetic draws inspiration from medieval depictions of animals and mythical creatures, evident in her expressive line work and stylised forms.

Her pieces often feature hand-painted, fluid brushstrokes in muted blue and earthy tones on a neutral clay base, evoking the simplicity and charm of historical pottery. The faces and creatures adorning her ceramics carry a timeless, almost folkloric quality, reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts, ancient pottery, and medieval woodcuts.

Salt's approach embraces the imperfections and character of hand-built ceramics, allowing for organic edges, subtle variations in tone, and a tactile, earthy finish. The restrained colour palette and minimalist compositions highlight the expressive mark-making and storytelling within her work. Each piece feels like an artefact from a forgotten past—imbued with symbolism, personality, and a quiet sense of mystery.

“I have a long-standing relationship with clay; my parents set up their own studio pottery before I was born so as long as I can remember I have had clay in my life. When we were little my siblings and I would play with clay while my parents worked. I used to make little dioramas with figures sitting on sofas, which my mum would glaze and fire for me. Maybe it’s because of this that I find myself being instinctively drawn back to working with clay.”

Her clay work is intuitively hand crafted using coiling, slab-building, modelling and pinching techniques. Each piece created is unique, from the brush strokes on the surface to the physical imprints that intentionally remain, serving as a testament to the making process.
